This glowing escort-card screen turns simple folded paper into a practical wedding installation. Plan the layout

Divide the 8-foot width into twelve vertical card columns. Ten cards per column creates space for 120 guests. Allow a 3-inch border inside the frame, and keep card centers between 32 and 64 inches from the floor so most guests can read them comfortably.

Step-by-step tutorial

1. Cut and score the paper

Cut long paper strips to your planned height, adding two inches for attachment tabs. Score every two inches with a ruler and bone folder. Alternate the folds forward and backward to create an even accordion.

Consistent two-inch folds create the cleanest sculptural rhythm.

2. Assemble and ballast the frame

Build the frame on a level floor and add approved ballast before hanging anything. Check the venue floor policy and protect stone or wood with non-marking pads.

3. Install the lighting layer

Fasten LED strands to the rear crossbars in vertical runs. Tape battery packs inside ventilated base covers where staff can reach them. Turn the lights on for 30 minutes and confirm they remain cool before adding paper.

4. Hang the pleated fins

Clip each folded strip at the top and bottom, overlapping neighboring fins by about two inches. Vary the bottom edge by 6–12 inches to create the sculptural wave while keeping the card area orderly.

5. Add ribbons and escort cards

Stretch twelve ribbon drops from the top bar. Mark equal card positions with removable tape, then clip cards in alphabetical order. Print a master list and keep ten blank cards, a pen and spare clips in the venue emergency kit.

6. Test the guest experience

Stand six feet back and confirm that names are readable without touching the paper. Keep at least 44 inches of clear walking width in front, and avoid placing the display where a bar line can block access.

Budget guidance

The frame is the largest reusable expense. Paper, cards and ribbon are consumables; LEDs, clips, tools and ballast can be reused. Include design time, alphabetizing, transport, assembly, on-site changes and strike in your quote. The Elegant Creators pricing calculator can help separate labor from materials.

Safety notes

  • Use battery LEDs only—never candles or hot lamps near paper.
  • Maintain at least a two-inch air gap behind the folded panels.
  • Secure and conceal every battery pack without blocking ventilation.
  • Ballast the frame independently; paper must not act as a stabilizer.
  • Keep the installation away from sprinklers, heaters, doors and accessible routes.

Troubleshooting

Pleats open unevenly: Rescore the fold and add a removable clip at the bottom tab.
Light shows in harsh dots: Move the LED strand farther behind the paper or add a translucent diffusion layer.
Cards curl: Use heavier cover stock and store cards flat until installation.
The display feels busy: Reduce the palette to two paper colors and one neutral ribbon.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use regular printer paper?

It can work for samples, but vellum and quality pearl paper create cleaner folds and transmit light more elegantly.

How do I handle last-minute guest changes?

Use clips instead of glue, carry blank matching cards and keep each table’s cards grouped on the master list.

Can this be used outdoors?

Paper reacts quickly to humidity and wind. Use it indoors unless a qualified fabricator specifies weather-safe materials and engineered ballast.
