This ivory, emerald and brushed-gold tablescape is designed for an intimate anniversary dinner, elegant birthday or small wedding celebration. The arrangement looks polished because every detail follows one plan: low floral bowls, measured spacing, repeated candle shapes and a narrow emerald runner that guides the eye down the table.

The tutorial below is planned for one 8-foot rectangular table with eight place settings. Adjust the quantities and spacing for your actual table, guest count and venue rules.

Materials and tools

Ivory linen, emerald runner, white flowers, olive greenery, ceramic bowls, chicken wire, flower pin holders, flameless candles, gold flatware and tools organized before building an anniversary tablescape.
Step 1: Gather and count every supply before covering the guest table.

Essential foundation supplies

  • One ivory tablecloth sized for the table and desired drop
  • One deep-emerald gauze runner, approximately 20 to 30 inches wide and 10 to 12 feet long
  • Three low watertight ivory ceramic bowls, approximately 9 to 12 inches wide
  • Three reusable floral pin holders or flower frogs
  • Coated floral chicken wire
  • Waterproof floral tape or floral adhesive putty appropriate for the containers
  • Floral snips, wire cutters, tape measure and protective gloves
  • Two water pitchers and flower food
  • Protective work towel or waterproof mat

Estimated flowers and greenery

These are planning estimates for three low, airy bowls. Stem size and flower openness can change the quantities substantially.

  • 24 to 30 white roses
  • 18 to 24 white ranunculus
  • 18 to 24 white lisianthus stems
  • 8 to 12 stems of a small white accent flower
  • 15 to 20 olive or olive-look greenery stems

For a budget-friendly version, use fewer premium blooms and increase greenery. For a fuller luxury version, add more roses and ranunculus while keeping the finished arrangements below the guests’ sightline.

Tabletop supplies

  • Six clear glass cylinder hurricanes with ivory flameless pillar candles
  • Eight slim brushed-gold candle holders with ivory flameless tapers
  • Eight matte ivory dinner plates and optional salad plates
  • Eight brushed-gold flatware settings
  • Eight clear water or wine glasses
  • Eight emerald cloth napkins and simple gold napkin rings
  • Eight blank ivory place cards
  • Optional small gold-rimmed LED votives

Measurements before you begin

  • Table: approximately 96 inches long by 36 to 40 inches wide.
  • Tablecloth: table length plus twice the desired end drop; table width plus twice the desired side drop.
  • Runner: center it lengthwise with an equal 12- to 18-inch floor puddle at each end, or hem it for a clean drop.
  • Centerpiece spacing: place one bowl at the table center and the other two approximately 24 to 28 inches from it.
  • Finished floral height: keep the highest flowers near or below 12 inches so seated guests can see one another.
  • Place-setting width: allow roughly 22 to 24 inches per guest when space permits.
  • Candle clearance: maintain open space between candles, flowers, napkins and the edge of each place setting.

Step 1: Condition and organize the flowers

Fill clean buckets with cool water and the correct amount of flower food. Remove foliage that would sit below the water line. Recut stems with clean snips and let them hydrate in a cool place before arranging. Keep roses, ranunculus, lisianthus and greenery separated so the quantities remain easy to track.

Inspect every bowl for cracks and confirm that it is watertight. Protect the work surface before adding water.

Step 2: Dress and measure the empty table

Ivory tablecloth and emerald runner centered on an eight-foot table with three empty ceramic bowls, a flower pin holder, chicken-wire dome, floral tape, snips and tape measure.
Step 2: Center the linen and runner, mark the bowl positions, and prepare the reusable floral mechanics.

Place the ivory cloth on the table and align its seams with the table edges. Smooth the top without pulling the corners unevenly. Center the emerald runner and measure both side margins rather than judging by eye.

Use small pieces of removable painter’s tape to mark the center point and the two outer bowl positions. Set a plate at one seat temporarily and confirm the nearest centerpiece will not crowd the guest’s glassware.

Step 3: Build the reusable bowl mechanics

  1. Put on protective gloves. Secure one floral pin holder inside each clean bowl using the method recommended for that holder and container.
  2. Cut coated chicken wire with wire cutters, not floral snips. Fold every sharp edge inward.
  3. Shape the wire into a low dome that sits securely over the bowl opening.
  4. Fix the wire to the bowl with waterproof floral tape arranged in a stable grid, or use an appropriate reusable mechanic.
  5. Add water slowly and check for leaks before placing the bowl on the finished runner.

The pin holder anchors the heavier stems while the chicken wire controls spacing and angle. The mechanic should be stable before any flowers are added.

Step 4: Green all three bowls first

Begin with olive greenery. Establish a low horizontal shape, extending slightly beyond both ends of each bowl. Rotate stem angles so the arrangement has depth from every seat. Keep the center lower than you think; flowers will add height.

Move from bowl to bowl instead of finishing one completely. This keeps their size, density and color balance consistent.

Step 5: Add flowers in a controlled sequence

Three low ceramic bowls at different stages of floral assembly on an emerald runner, with chicken wire visible in the nearest bowl and white stems and tools arranged on a protective towel.
Step 5: Build all three bowls together—greenery first, then roses, lisianthus and ranunculus—so their scale remains consistent.
  1. Roses: place five to seven roses in each bowl to establish the main mass.
  2. Lisianthus: use the branching stems to soften edges and connect focal blooms.
  3. Ranunculus: place these where their detailed faces are visible from seated height.
  4. Accent flowers: add only enough to loosen the shape and fill genuine gaps.
  5. Final greenery: use a few small stems to cover visible mechanics without creating a thick hedge.

Turn each bowl as you work. A centerpiece can look full from one side and unfinished from the other. Check the height from a seated chair before adding more flowers.

Step 6: Place the candles safely

Arrange the glass hurricanes between—not directly against—the floral bowls. Alternate heights without creating a perfect repeating row. Add brushed-gold taper holders in open spaces, then test every flameless candle before setting the table.

Even with LED candles, leave room around the flowers and fabric. This prevents crowded photographs and protects delicate stems from being knocked during service.

Step 7: Complete each place setting

Center the dinner plate on each chair. Place flatware consistently, then add the glassware above the knife area according to the service plan. Roll or fold each emerald napkin the same way and finish it with a simple gold ring. Use blank or minimally printed place cards so the table remains calm.

After all eight settings are complete, sit in at least two chairs and check that guests can reach their glassware, see across the table and move their chairs without catching the tablecloth.

Step 8: Photograph, correct and remove tools

Take one photograph from each end and one at seated eye level. Correct leaning tapers, uneven runner folds, crowded glassware and exposed floral mechanics. Remove every tool, water drop, damaged petal and loose leaf before photographing the finished design.

Budget, standard and luxury options

Budget version

Use one central floral bowl and two smaller bud-vase groupings. Rent or reuse white plates, choose simple stainless flatware and use fewer candle holders. Keep the emerald runner and napkins as the primary color statement.

Standard version

Use all three floral bowls, mixed hurricane heights, gold taper holders, coordinated napkins and full place settings. Choose in-season white flowers to protect the budget.

Luxury version

Upgrade the linen, source premium garden roses and ranunculus, add professionally cleaned rental glassware and flatware, include custom stationery and provide on-site floral refreshing, styling and strike service. Keep the floral height low even when the bloom count increases.

Pricing guidance for decorators

Quote the tablescape as a complete service, not as a collection of inexpensive accessories. Include:

  • Design time and sample-table planning
  • Fresh flowers, greenery and a spoilage reserve
  • Container, linen, runner, candle-holder, plate, flatware and glassware rentals
  • Consumable mechanics and cleaning supplies
  • Flower conditioning and arrangement labor
  • Delivery, loading, parking and on-site setup
  • Post-event strike, inventory count, washing and return labor
  • Breakage allowance, overhead and profit

For one eight-guest table, estimate approximately 4 to 7 hours of total design, floral and installation labor depending on sourcing and rental preparation. Use your actual numbers in the Elegant Creators Pricing Calculator.

Safety and care notes

  • Floral pin holders and cut wire are sharp. Wear gloves, use proper cutters and fold wire edges inward.
  • Keep flower water, plant food and tools away from food-preparation surfaces.
  • Confirm the venue’s candle policy. This tutorial uses flameless LED candles.
  • Keep every candle and holder stable and clear of greenery, napkins and guest sleeves.
  • Some flowers and greenery can irritate skin or be toxic if ingested. Keep them away from food, children and pets.
  • Do not block guest sightlines, serving routes, exits or accessibility paths.
  • Wipe water from the floor immediately to prevent slips.

Troubleshooting

The centerpieces look too round and compact

Remove a few perimeter flowers, extend two or three greenery stems horizontally and vary the flower heights by one or two inches. Do not turn the arrangement into a tall dome.

The emerald color feels too heavy

Narrow the runner, use emerald only on the napkins and increase the visible ivory linen. Avoid adding more green accessories simply because they match.

The table looks cluttered

Remove duplicate votives and check the space assigned to each guest. A beautiful table must still function for food and conversation.

The bowls do not match one another

Count focal flowers per bowl and compare them side by side. Move flowers between bowls before adding more stems.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the centerpieces the day before?

You can condition the flowers and prepare the mechanics in advance. The best assembly time depends on the flower varieties, refrigeration and transport. If you arrange early, keep the flowers hydrated and in an appropriate cool environment away from food and ethylene-producing fruit.

Can I use floral foam instead of chicken wire?

You can use mechanics appropriate to your flowers and containers, but this tutorial uses reusable pin holders and coated wire. Whichever method you choose must be stable, watertight and suitable for the venue.

What can replace olive greenery?

Try ruscus, myrtle or another narrow-leaf greenery available in your market. Avoid large leaves that overpower the low white flowers.

How many centerpieces do I need for a longer table?

Maintain the same 24- to 28-inch planning rhythm, then adjust around serving pieces and guest settings. A 12-foot table may need four bowls or three bowls plus small bud-vase groups.

Will this palette work for a wedding?

Yes. Ivory, emerald and brushed gold work especially well for formal dinners, winter weddings and anniversary celebrations. The same construction method can be scaled across multiple guest tables.
